Celebrating 40 years of the collection.

Wollongong City Council began collecting art works from local art prize exhibitions with the assistance of the Wollongong Art Purchase Committee in 1956. These works, along with the Bob Sredersas Gift, formed the city’s Art Collection when Wollongong Art Gallery was opened in 1978. Today the Wollongong Art Gallery Collection comprises 2,969 works spanning across a diverse range of objects from Neolithic pots in the Mann-Tatlow Collection of Asian Art to Colonial and Early Australian Art from 1831, Indigenous Art from 1950 and Contemporary Art from 1960.

As part of Wollongong Art Gallery’s 40th Anniversary celebration in 2018 the collection will be showcased and presented in a range of interesting configurations in exhibitions around the Gallery and is now available on line as a searchable database.
